Painting with Scissors

This is how Henri Matisse described the cut outs that he created in the latter part of his life. Confined to a wheelchair from 1941 until his death 14 years later, Matisse found great liberation in this form of creativity. “Une seconde vie” is how he described it.

My next charity shop find is entitled ‘Relief’ and signed PB. A relief is the projection of forms or figures on a flat background. So, although this watercolour is well painted it so obviously lacks the vitality of a Matisse cutout.

Unfair to compare them of course but quite an interesting comparison at the same time.
